A review of the biophysical principles and computational modeling that underpin deep brain stimulation. We cover how applied electric fields interact with neural tissue, volume-of-tissue-activated estimates, multi-compartment axon cable models, and network-level simulations, and how these models increasingly inform electrode targeting, contact selection, programming, and the rational design of next-generation neuromodulation therapies.
